Common Problems
Always remember the mantra: *Reboot before you troubleshoot*. Please be sure to reboot the computer you are working on, or reboot the printer you are attempting to print to, before you exhaust any extensive troubleshooting scenarios.

<b> Print's won't release </b>

# Check the Trays to make sure there is paper.
## The printers in 3054 of Science East and in the Student Center may say the tray is empty though it has paper. On the bottom right, click options and then select a different tray to print.
## In 201B of Ben Shahn the printer may not show any print jobs listed. A reboot usually solves this issue. Sometimes there is an issue with putting paper in the side tray. The 11x17 that normally goes in the side tray, should be put in one of the 5 lower trays to print.
# Check the Ink/Supply
## Go through the supplies and check the levels of ink, toner collection, transfer kit, fuser kit, and drum cartridge.
# Check the Errors
##If you look at the top right of the screen, and there is an exclamation point in a yellow sign, the printer has an error. Click on that sign, and you will see the error. Common errors are trays are out of paper, ink levels low, a paper jam (click on it and the printer will give you an idea of where the jam is), or an usb error(clearing it should work). If there is an error code you do not recognize, look it up at https://www.dell.com/support/ and put the relevant information in a helpdesk ticket.

<b> Technician Instructions </b>
# Is the print queue mapped on the workstation? Verify that the PC is located in the correct OU in Active Directory. If other Computers in the OU also do not have the proper print queues mapped, open a web help desk ticket with the name of the computers and the name of the print queue that needs to be added.
# Is user the only one having a problem? Verify that this is the case. Attempt to print to the same printer and release the print job.
## Yes.
### Is the user able to map a printer from the workstation? If not, Verify that the workstation is online (pinging). Reboot the computer and verify that the issue is not resolved. If the issue persists, try printing as a different user on the same workstation. Verify that other workstations in the area are not having issues printing as well.
### Is the user able to print some documents, but not others? This could be a print driver issue. Please open a web help desk ticket and attach the FILE to the ticket.
### Is the user able to log into computers, but unable to log into a release station? Graduate students are often flagged because they are marked as "alumni" in Active Directory instead of as an active student. Call Help Desk - they can verify a student is registered for classes and then place the account into the proper "students" OU.
### Is the issue tied to the user or the machine that the user is using? Have a different account log into the same machine and verify that they can print successfully, as well as "release" the print job if appropriate.
## No.
### Can you ping the printer?
#### If you cannot ping the printer, reboot the printer. Verify that it comes back online. If it does not, ask network and hardware to verify good connectivity. This eliminates the possibility of a network problem.
### Check the print queue. Is there a document stuck in a "printing" status (but never being printed)? Is there a print job stuck in an "error" status? Right click the document > Cancel. Wait about 30 seconds and then press F5 to refresh your view. Verify the job has successfully been removed from the print queue. If subsequent documents also get stuck, Clear the entire print queue and see if "fresh" documents also have the same problem. If it is still an issue, Reboot the printer. If it is still an issue, open a Web Help Desk ticket with the name of the print queue and all previous troubleshooting steps taken.
## If you determine that the problem is the printer and not the network, or, if the printer is displaying an error message that has to be addressed:
### Get the service tag number of the printer (tag on back of machine)
### Go to support.dell.com - enter the service tag number - Warranty information will display.
### If the printer is under warranty, contact Dell Support

Printer is OFFLINE
#Check the ethernet jack in the back to make sure it's plugged in. Students will sometimes unplug the printers.
#Attempt to ping the printer
#Reboot the printer
#Verify that the port on the wall is functioning
#Verify that the issue is only related to this printer - are other devices in the room or area ALSO having network connectivity issues? This is important to take note of, as it will increase the likelihood of the issue being resolved in a timely manner. Include this information in a web help desk ticket.

PC's Print to Print Services
Student PC's will connect to the incorrect printer and default to Print Services. WPU Print Services is for faculty and staff only. If you see students trying to print to the orange WPU Print Services printer, please open a ticket for that computer and include the service tag. Direct the student to the pharosps\BW or \COLOR printer.

Printer Says Incorrect Paper
If a patron printed an odd-sized document, the printer may get locked up. We only supply 8.5x11 paper. Make sure to set all trays to 8.5x11.

What to do when the Printer printing out blank pages?
# Remove the toner cartridge and then the imaging unit.
# Firmly shake the imaging unit
# Reinstall the imaging unit and then the cartridge and then resend the print job.
# If it still prints blank pages, then replace the imaging unit. Imaging units are not covered under warranty, so the manufacturer would not replace it. The department would have to purchase them.
# If the printer still prints out blank pages,it might be the printer problem then call the manufacturer technical support

Working with Different Printers
HP M806
We have the M806 printers in the Library, Ben Shahn, and Valley Road.

Paper Tray Locations
*Paper Tray 1 - manual paper feed on top of the printer
*Paper Trays 2 & 3 - Normal paper trays, labeled

Paper Tray Orientation
* These printers automatically detect the orientation of the paper in their trays. The paper size, that the printer chooses, is determined by the width of the paper guides.
* Printers may need to be rebooted after the proper orientations are set on the paper trays
Paper should be oriented as pictured:

Checking for Jams
Open the front cover of the printer. When you open the printer, you'll notice some teal colored tabs. These indicate parts that can be removed or adjusted.

Remove the ink cartridge and check for any loose paper.

Remove the fuser.

Check the back of the printer for any jammed paper in the rear paper feeder.

Check the back of the printer where you can remove the imaging kit.

The image below shows you how to remove the rear imaging kit and some spots to check.

LaserJet MFP m725
The m725 is deployed in the Ben Shahn Printer room.

Dell 5130cn
The Dell 5130cn is used in several staff offices, but not in any of our print rooms.
Removing and Reseating the Drum Cartridges on the Dell 5130cn Printer
* Turn the printer off.
* Open the front cover.

* Rotate the lock levers of the inner cover to open it.

* Grasp the handles on the drum cartridge you want to replace and pull out the cartridge halfway.

* Grasp one side of the drum cartridge with the other hand and pull out the cartridge from the printer.
* If this is a new drum cartridge, pull out the ribbons.

* Slide the cartridge into the slot.

* Remove the orange protective covering (if present) of the installed drum cartridge and discard.

* Close the inner cover.

* Rotate the lock levers to secure the cover.
* Close the front cover.
Removing and installing the fuser on Dell 5130cn printer
Removing a fuser
* Turn off the printer and wait for 30 minutes before removing the fuser.
* Raise the latch on the handle of the right hand cover to open the cover

* Grasp both handles of the installed fuser with your hands and pull it out

Installing a new fuser
* Unpack a new fuser.
* Grasp both handles of the fuser with your hands and install the fuser in the printer
* Close the right hand cover

Reset to Factory Defaults
DO NOT reset to factory (default) settings unless you have exhausted all other troubleshooting steps possible.
Information Systems must reconfigure the printer if you perform a factory reset.
# Go to utilities setting of printer's LCD menu
# Find restore factory default settings
# Open a ticket in Web Help Desk to configure a network printer.

Paper Jams
If printer is jamming, try to determine where it’s jamming. Under the printer coming up from the tray, in the rear just before coming out, when it duplexes? This will help the phone tech. If you can't see the cause of the jam, tech support will walk you through steps to clear it.

Performance Issues
Outlook is Performing Slowly
Try the following steps to help with overall slowness.
* If they have multiple inboxes, make sure they are "minimized" during use. Use the small triangle to the left of the email address to minimize the inbox. When inboxes are open they are pinging for new mail and can cause slowness.
* Remove unneeded emails. Right click the email address and click "Remove". If the email can't be removed, please make a ticket at www.wpunj.edu/helpdesk.

* Calendars: remove unnecessary or old calendars. Make sure several calendars are not being loaded at the same time.

<b> To do this, </b>

1) First, right click on the event that you want to delete, then go all the way down to select delete

<b> To check for add-ins </b>
* Click File, Options, Add-ins. Next to Manage: COM Add-ins click Go..., then disable all add-ins. This helps with speed as well.

Inbox has over 5,000 items
Outlook can start to slow down when folder sizes increase upwards of 5,000 items. If you are experiencing slow performance issues, identify any folder larger than 5,000 items and clean it up.

# Open Outlook
# Select your inbox
# On the "details" bar, see how many items are in the folder
# Take action to bring the folder item count lower than 5,000
#* Delete unnecessary items
#* Move items to a subfolder folder by right-clicking on inbox, then it will give you an option to click on “create a new subfolder”, name it and then left click the items and hold it to drag it to place on the new subfolder.

#Select other folders and view the "details" bar to verify they are under 5,000 items as well. Common folders all users should check include:
#* Inbox
#* Subfolders
#* Sent Items
#* Deleted Items

Cleaning up your Mailbox
If your mailbox size is reaching the limit, Outlook provides the following tools to assist
# File > Look at the Mailbox Cleanup graphic & text. Here you can see how much space is free. <BR>
# File > Cleanup Tools > Mailbox Cleanup
## Select "Find items larger than XXX kilobytes
## Change the number to 600
## Click Find
## If you have a lot of results, click the Size column and target the largest emails first.
# File > Cleanup Tools > Mailbox Cleanup
## Click Empty to empty the deleted items folder.
## Everything in your Deleted Items folder will be permanently deleted. Click Yes to continue.

Search Results Vary
If the "quick search" in your inbox is not showing all of your messages, try the following:
#Bring up the Advanced Find window by pressing <code>Ctrl+Shift+F</code>
#In the Advanced Find window, click Browse
#In the Select Folder(s) window, expand the "Inbox" and select all the subfolders beneath it <br>
#:Note: Selecting the "Search subfolders" check box at the bottom of the window does not select all the subfolders in Inbox.
#Click OK
#Proceed to enter your search criteria in the "Search for the word(s):" field. You may also want to change the "In" field to "subjectfield and message body" instead of "subjectfield only" by using the drop down menu.

Import of Outlook 2011 Profile Fails
If the outlook profile fails to import at first launch check the following:

1) Make sure Outlook 2011 is not running. Outlook will run even if the main window is open. Make sure to actually quit the program.

2) Go to the Users and Groups pane in System Preferences. Click on the affected user. Go to "Login items" Locate Outlook Database Daemon". If it exists remove it from the items by selecting it and clicking on the "-" button.

3) Make sure Outlook 2011 is not a startup item.

4) To be safe, have the user logout. Make sure that "Reopen windows when logging in" is UNCHECKED. Have the user log back in.

5) Open Outlook 2016. Go to the "tools" menu. Select 'Accounts". Remove the user account. This may be lengthy depending on how much data the user has.

6) Go to ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/Outlook/

7) Delete the "Outlook 15 Profiles" folder. Make sure to empty the trash.

8) Start Outlook 2016.

9) From the File menu select "Import".

10) Select "Outlook 2011 data on this computer:" It should find the Outlook 2011 data. Pick the most recent Identity (should be "Main Identity").

11) You may be warned that there are applications that need to be quit. These are typically the Database Daemon. HOWEVER if you see something like "SyncAgent" in the list proceed to the next step. If not you can skip to step (21).

12) We need to quit the sync agent. Go to the "Utilities" folder (/Applications/Utilities/).
13) Open "Activity Monitor".

14) Type the name of the "sync" application from the Outlook 2016 Prompt into the search box. If it is running (it will be) it will show up.

15) Click on the "X" (quit process) button.

16) A window appears that says "Are you sure you want to quit this process?". Do not do anything else yet.

17) Arrange the windows so that you can see the Outlook 2016 "quit these applications" window and the Activity Monitor window.

18) Click "Force quit" in the Activity Monitor window.

19) click on the "quit applications" in the Outlook import window.

20) The import should proceed. If it doesn't, cycle through steps 17 and 18 until it does.

21) When the import is done check that there aren't any messages about missed, missing or failed items.

Confirmation of Enrollment
Confirmation of Enrollment is located in WPconnect. Users should log in, click Faculty and Advisors, then Confirmation of Enrollment. Users will then be brought to a page that says 'Mid-Term Grades' or 'Confirmation of Enrollment.' Either one is fine.

Classes and students are listed, and faculty can go through one by one to say Yes or No to each student. They may need to scroll down or click through multiple pages to see all the students in each class.

How to Use
The following are directions on how to report enrollment:
* Log onto WPconnect
* Go to the Faculty & Advisors tab.
* Under “Faculty & Academic Admin” heading click on the Confirmation of Enrollment link.

* This will bring you the “Midterm Grade page”. Confirmation of Enrollment is collected under the Midterm grade heading.

* You should now see the listing of all of your courses. To view the most current listing of courses (201940-Fall 2019) click on the arrow next to the “Term” heading to sort.
* To start the confirmation process, click on button under “Grading Status” next to the course that you wish to view.
* Enter the student’s status using the drop down box (“YES”/“NO”) under the “Midterm Grade” heading.
* **DO NOT ENTER THE STUDENT’S LAST ATTEND DATES OR HOURS ATTENDED.**

* When done – click the “save” button at the bottom right of the page.

* Your roster will now indicate “complete” under “My Courses”.

Read Only Classes
If a class is 'read only' and they can't edit the 'grade' then that class is team taught, and they're likely not set as the primary instructor on the class. Only the primary instructor can enter confirmation of attendance (and final grades when the time comes.) If you need to change the primary instructor, contact department admin staff.

Technical Issuess
Please call the Help Desk at 973-720-4357. A staff member will have to help you unlock your Banner account or reset your Banner PIN. If you are able, take a screen shot (or photo) of the screen that signaled a possible technical problem.
